Awakening of the Soul

There is an elderly sister whose memory is gradually declining and her thoughts are often confused. Every day, her son would print a few Bible verses, a short hymn familiar to her, family updates, and some delightful images on a piece of paper for her. Day in and day out, she would read out each and every word on the page. As she reads, she would use color markers to underline some words. Where a verse touches her heart, she would exclaim, “How precious!” or “Amen!” She would read that verse again and again. Her shattered thoughts would seem to be awakened and come together so that she would be immersed in the love of the Heavenly Father, and her family’s love in accompanying her.
The words of the Bible can truly awaken the soul, the heart that is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Every child of God has this precious grace. Even in old age or when confused, the Holy Spirit would still continue to keep, to guide, and to call upon us. When we are willing to respond and allow the Spirit to lead us, He will draw us into a close relationship with the Lord. Through listening to His word, we will have a deeper understanding of His will and be closer to Him.
If we always listen to the word of God, store it up in our hearts and meditate on it, the holy word will be a great help to us even in times of danger and difficulties. It will help us respond to the Spirit’s call, recall God’s promises, and so experience His presence. How precious that is!
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
“Cherish God’s Word in Our Hearts, Journey Together in Genuine Fellowship” is the direction the church encourages brothers and sisters to pursue in the coming year. By using the Bible study plans provided by the church or creating group-based plans, we can fill our hearts full of God’s gracious word. The Holy Spirit will renew our hearts, allowing us to sincerely walk with God and others. How blessed that would be.
